| Our Toy 'n' Joy program brightens the lives of hundreds of children each year who otherwise would have no gifts to open during the holidays. Toy 'n' Joy is a purely volunteer-driven program - with people donating toys, time and expertise - and is a testament to the power of people coming together to help their neighbors in need. | |
| Toy Suggestions One of the tools we used in making our suggestions list was the ToysRUs Web site, which lists the most popular toys. If you go the homepage, you will see on the left column "Shop by Age." If you click on that, it will display the most popular toys for each age group. That might be helpful to you. Families select their own toys It's also good to know that we set up a Toy Shop to distribute the toys, so parents (and kids, sometimes) are able to select what they want for their families. Therefore, you don't need to worry about buying an X-Box game and having it go to a kid who has Nintendo. The families will be able to choose what matches their wants or the technology they have at home. Don't forget, we are here to provide toys kids really want, not the toys we WISH they wanted. What else is important to know? Please donate new toys only, and try to avoid places such as dollar stores. They have good deals, but sometimes carry toys from unknown manufacturers or fail to remove recalled toys. Don't forget the older kids! When we send out specific requests of items, we always ask for more toys than we need for the older kids, and fewer toys than we need for the younger kids, because people prefer to buy cute stuff for toddlers, and we always end up with too much of that, and not enough for the older kids. There are pretty cool building sets for older kids, such as Legos and Bionicle. There are also a lot of neat arts and crafts things older girls might like more. And girls always like makeup and purses and such. Boys also like video games. Again, the parents will be able to choose, so they can get a game that matches the system they have. A word about dolls... With dolls, please keep in mind that we do serve people of color, and the majority of dolls donated are white babies. If you would like to purchase some ethnic dolls, that would help balance it out. We know it's harder to find them, but we need them. |
